Five Sentence Fiction - Faeries

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.
This week: FAERIES

The sun was just beginning to come up and I could feel the warmth of the protruding light bouncing off of my sleepy face. I awoke to a buzzing sound, an annoying throbbing vibration that circled around my head in many different directions left me feeling dizzy, sick to my stomach even, which put me in a mood of confusion and frustration. I began to swap my hand around, trying to keep the unknown creature from flying into my face. The pixie like fairy suddenly stopped hovering over my body and began to look directly at me as if she had something important to say. I began to look at her with more detail, tracing each wing with my eyes, and watching the loose bright orange glitter from her wings sprinkle specs of magic onto my bed sheets.

This week: MEDICINE

I stood there in the gloomy and frigid hospital room, watching with troubled eyes, wondering if this was going to be the day that my son would die. Life and death would take place at the same time in this room, I was sure of it. I could not move; my legs were numb and cemented into the center of the square designed floor, but my eyes stayed glued to my little boy, whom was still grasping his toy truck that had become his new favorite obsession. The ticking sound of the bland clock that was behind me was beginning to keep me in a daze; I was brought back to the sound of my son telling me that he needed me. It was in that precious moment of life and death, that I understood that no matter what the color or shape of the pill he took for his illness, I was his prescription of choice.

Five Sentence Fiction - Lost

This week: LOST

It was just a few minutes after midnight and I knew that I had to vanish, escape, and lose myself into the September night air. My skin glowed a silky pale blue, almost as if the moon’s reflective light was seeping into my veins. I kneeled down in the lowlands, keeping my distance from the group of men on the hill and I began to scream with silent fear, feeling as though I could get wound up in the barbed wire fences or worse, caught by the men who held me captive. The moon stayed with me, sending me a luminous light of comfort as I prayed to the Gods to turn me into an invisible woman; by then, I heard a soft whispering voice telling me to run North. It was him; a loveable man whom I had watched from my days working in the muddy fields.

Five Sentence Fiction - Orange

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.
FSF this week: ORANGE.

The African sky seemed to slip off into two different dimensions; one with an amber color slicing through a gold amulet of fortune, and the other half carrying a vast amount of heartache and lust. I could see that the clouds were holding heavy raindrops full of grief, remorse, even a belly full of desire. I captured the moment on camera, keeping the two pigments of color side by side. It was a moment of life and death, happiness and sorrow, desire and loneliness, all wrapped up in a golden, amber charm. I came to an understanding that we as humans experience the same split of joy and pain, and I realize that within the confusion of the divided parts of us, there lies beauty.

My 2012 Late Oscar Nominations Movie Reviews

I am quite late to the Oscar Nominated party extravaganza, but I did find some spare time over the holiday weekend to dive deep into a pool of mixed emotions. I watched three of the Oscar Nominated films for this year, however, I did watch The Help way back when and was floored with the talent that was in this film!

The Descendents
I was really looking forward to seeing this, but became bored with it VERY fast! George Clooney is an amazing actor, but this film was not his best. His character Matt King, was trying to reconnect with his two daughters that became estranged from him because he worked all the time. Their mother had an accident on a boat (or so I think….it was that bad!) and she is in a coma due to this incident. In the midst of it all, Matt’s oldest daughter Alex, explains to him about her bitterness towards her mother. She was having an affair with a man that was in real estate. Long story short, they pull the plug on the mother, the children continue to use their potty mouth, but with their loving, out-of-the-loop father, and end the film with a bowl of ice-cream and blankets. I give the film a 4 out of 10.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
I am always interested in anything that Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock do! This movie is based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, about a young boy who has a phobia of experiencing life. With the tragedy of September 11th, he finds clues from his father that leads him to an adventure. Thomas Schell, who is played by Hanks, has a meeting in the Twin Towers on the day of the attacks. His son Oscar, played by Thomas Horn, believes his father left him a key to find the mysterious lock. I won’t give away the whole movie, but the message behind the actual story is quite uplifting and inspiring. You are left with the notion that everyone has lost something or someone in their life -- within this, we are all connected. I give this film an 8 out of 10.

 Albert Nobbs
This movie is now officially on my top list of movies! This film got mixed reviews, rolled eyes, and confused brains. Here’s the thing -- you have to have an open mind to stories such as the one of Albert Nobbs. The film was honest, painful, and realistic - and I truly believe that Glenn Close should have won the Oscar for Best Actress for this film. Glenn, who plays the role of Albert Nobbs, is a woman disguised as a man during the early 19th century. I also do not want to give away much of the story line, but within Albert’s self-exploration, he meets a painter who is also a woman disguised as a man. Through the knowledge of understanding their reasoning for doing so, they become close friends and Albert comes to feel he can stop hiding the truth and become free. There are some parts of the film that are hard to follow, but overall, the story is touching and quite realistic for the time period. I give this film a 9 out of 10!

Five Sentence Fiction - Foggy

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.

This week: FOGGY

The morning sun shone through the kitchen glass window, creating rays of holy light that bounced off of her blonde locks. Her coffee was brewing and the aroma of the rich coffee beans surrounded her as she walked out onto her porch to pick up the newspaper. Freshly cut green grass stretched out before her, soaking up the last bits of dew that remained in the early March mornings. Suddenly, she found herself back in her bed, wakening from the sounds of the doctor’s prognosis. It was unclear to her, a vague conversation that she overheard clarifying to her family that she is paralyzed from the waist down.
